In the late 1700s Shūsui drew the pictures for a number of woodblock-printed books. One of these books, published in 1789 and entitled Zōho Kashiragaki Kinmō Zui Taisei (i.e., A New Compilation of an Illustrated Encyclopedia for the People with Head Notes), included the sixty-nine pages of flower and (or) bird pictures shown in this gallery. The shapes of both flowers and birds were only semi-accurate and their true colors were omitted so it would have been difficult for book owners to match the pictures with their wild counterparts.
